Digital Literacy 101

A practical starting point for children and young people learning how to use technology confidently, safely, and meaningfully.

Digital Literacy & Online Safety

Technology is everywhere. Students use phones, apps, and social media every day. But most of them do not understand how any of it actually works, what data they are sharing, or how easily they can be manipulated online. So we start there.

What We Teach

We break technology down into something students can actually understand, then move into how to stay safe while using it.

Understanding Tech

  • What technology really is beyond phones
  • How apps work in simple terms
  • The difference between software and hardware
  • What happens when you send a message
  • How the internet, servers, and networks work

Staying Safe

  • Digital footprints and privacy
  • Online scams and fake content
  • Cyberbullying and online behavior
  • Creating strong passwords
  • Responsible use of social media

How We Teach It

We do not stand and talk for hours. Students interact. They question things they use every day, break down systems they never thought about, analyze how technology actually works, and discuss real scenarios. They learn how to think, not just listen.

Students learning digital literacy and online safety in a classroom session

Activities

  • Mapping how a message travels from one phone to another
  • Breaking down a phone into its different systems
  • Spotting fake vs real content
  • Creating Safe Internet Rules for their school
  • Discussing real-life online situations and how to respond

Outcome

Students leave this session seeing technology differently. They stop being passive users. They start asking questions. They understand that technology is powerful, and that they need to know how to use it properly.

Why It Matters

Before building anything, students need awareness. If they do not understand the tools they use every day, they cannot build with them. This is where that understanding begins.
